Visual Communication Workshop

FR - Ce nouvel atelier mettra l'accent sur des concepts théoriques et pratiques, ainsi que des outils émergents, pour améliorer notre capacité de visualiser et communiquer nos données. L'atelier a pour but de: (1) nous aider à nous familiariser aux normes de la conception visuelle en science en apprenant des figures/graphiques du passé et en pensant à celles de l'avenir (jour 1); et (2) améliorer nos compétences en programmation pour réduire l'écart entre notre imagination et nos limites techniques (jour 2).

EN - This workshop will focus on theoretical and practical concepts to improve our ability to communicate visually and will present emerging tools to help sort, understand and communicate our data. The objectives of the workshop are to (1) help us reconnect visual design standards with science by learning from the past and thinking about the future (first day); and (2) improve programming skills to reduce the gap between our imagination and technical limitations (second day).

FR - Ce Workshop se tiendra à la Maison de Gault (Université McGill, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, situé à 40 minutes en voiture depuis Montréal). Un plan d'accès du site est disponible sur leur site internet. Les repas et l'hébergement seront entièrement fournis par le CSBQ durant les deux jours. Les participants peuvent arriver la veille de l'atelier (18h00 à 20h00), mais aucun souper ne sera servi pour cette soirée. Les participants doivent également apporter leurs propres sleeping bag, serviettes et effets personnels.

Règles de la Maison Gault :

• Il est interdit de fumer dans tous les bâtiments et dans un rayon de 9 mètres (30 pieds) de toutes portes
• Vous êtes responsable de tout dommage causé à l'équipement ou aux bâtiments
• Aucun système de son est autorisé à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur de la Maison Gault
• L'utilisation de bougies à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur est interdite
• Il est interdit d'utiliser un barbecue
• Il est interdit de déplacer les meubles à l'extérieur
• Les feux doivent être effectués dans le foyer désigné
• Toutes les livraisons ou mise en place spéciale doivent être effectuées le jour de l'événement
• Il est interdit de se baigner dans le lac ou d’apporter des animaux domestiques
• La zone ouverte autour des chalets est utilisable, mais svp rester en dehors des bois adjacents (il y a des plantes rares et des sites de recherche à long terme à proximité)
• Suivre la carte des sentiers, et les heures d’ouverture et fermetures
• L'alcool est permit, mais svp consommer avec moderation

EN - This workshop will be held at the Gault House (McGill University, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, about 40 minutes from Montreal by car). The Gault House location is available on their website. Food and accommodation will be fully covered by the QCBS during both days. Participants are welcome to arrive the day before the workshop (18:00 to 20:00) but no dinner will be provided for that evening. All participants must also bring their own sleeping bag, towels and toiletries.

Gault Reserve Rules:

• Smoking is prohibited in all buildings, and is also prohibited within a radius of 9 metres (30 ft) outside any door
• You are responsible or any damage caused to the equipment or the buildings
• No sound system is permitted inside or outside Gault House
• Use of candles inside or outside is prohibited
• It is not permitted to use a BBQ
• It is prohibited to move furniture outside
• External fires must be done in the designated fire pit
• All deliveries or special set-up must be done the day of the event
• It is prohibited to swim in the lake or bring pets
• Open area around the chalets is useable, but please stay out of the adjacent woods (there are rare plants and long-term research sites nearby)
• Please follow trail map, and respect opening & closing hours
• Alcohol is permitted, but please drink responsibly

The Inkscape workshop is divided in two parts.

First part will be a general overview of the Inkscape program.

What you need:

1. Install Inkscape 0.91 (Mac users have to install http://xquartz.macosforge.org/ first)
2. Then, open a new empty document in Inkscape

The second part is an exercise to practice vectorial design through a scientific poster:

2. Open the workshop_poster.svg with Inkscape
