Êtes-vous un•e passionné•e d’écologie microbienne ne se sentant pas représenté•e par les séminaires de votre département ? Aimeriez-vous faire la rencontre de gens de votre domaine en assistant à des conférences sur le sujet à Montréal ?  Voici une nouvelle initiative menée par des étudiant•es-chercheur•es du CSBQ qui vise à donner de la visibilité aux scientifiques locaux et internationaux de tout acabit en écologie microbienne. Une conférence par mois aura lieu dans une des universités affiliées (UdeM, UQÀM, McGill, Concordia et INRS) d’Octobre 2018 à Mars 2019.  Toutes les conférences sont gratuites et ouvertes à tous, avec rafraîchissement et collation inclus!

Are you a microbial ecologist who feels left out by your department seminars? Would you like to meet more researchers from your field by attending microbial ecology talks in Montreal? A new initiative led by QCBS students offers you a series of seminars on microbial ecology in Montreal (UdeM, UQÀM, McGill, Concordia and INRS), every month, from October 2018 to March 2019. All conferences are free and open to all, refreshments included!

===Erin Bertrand===

La Professeure Erin Bertrand a reçu un baccalauréat en Chimie et Environnement du Bates College en 2005. Elle a par la suite complété son doctorat avec le Professeur Mak A. Saito via un programme conjoint entre le MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) et le WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) en 2012, où elle a étudié comment les microorganismes marins produisent, acquièrent et utilisent la vitamine B12. Elle a par la suite poursuivi ses recherches en écologie microbienne marine à la Scripps Institution of Oceanography et au J. Craig Venter Institute. En 2015, son parcours l’a mené à Halifax, Canada, où elle est devenue professeure de microbiologie et d’océanographie à l’Université Dalhousie. Ses recherches portent sur la protéomique microbienne et la biogéochimie des éléments traces en milieu marin. Elle détient actuellement la Chaire de Recherche du Canada CRSNG Niveau II en Protéomique Microbienne Marine et a reçu de nombreux prix pour la qualité exceptionnelle de ses recherches.

Professor Erin Bertrand received her B.Sc. in Chemistry and Environmental studies from Bates College in 2005. She then completed her PhD with Professor Mak A. ===Catherine Girard===

<hidden>

Catherine Girard a obtenu son baccalauréat à l’Université de Montréal en 2011 et son doctorat à la même université en 2017.  Pendant cette période, elle a étudié le cycle photochimique du mercure dans des étangs thermokarst de l’Arctique ainsi que l’impact de la diète alimentaire à teneur élevée en mercure sur le microbiote intestinal de la communauté Inuit.  Son domaine d’expertise est l’écotoxicologie, particulièrement dans le contexte du microbiote intestinal et de la biodisponibilité du mercure.  Elle effectue maintenant un stage postdoctoral dans le laboratoire de découverte et d’écologie virale d’Alex Culley de l’Université Laval à Québec.  Elle s’intéresse à la diversité virale en Arctique et à son implication tant au niveau environnemental qu’au niveau de la santé humaine.  Elle porte aussi un intérêt marqué pour la communication scientifique, la vulgarisation et la représentation de la diversité dans les sciences.  Elle est co-fondatrice du groupe de travail Women in Science de l’Université de Montréal et a gagné en 2017 le deuxième prix de la compétition “Ma thèse en 180 secondes” au niveau national.

Catherine Girard is currently a post-doc researcher in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics, at Laval University, in Quebec. She received her BSc from University of Montreal, in 2011, and completed her PhD at the same university in 2017. During this period, she studied the photochemical cycling of mercury in thermokarst thaw ponds in the Arctic, as well as the fate of food-borne mercury in the diet of the Inuit and interactions with the gut microbiome, becoming an expert in ecotoxicology, gut microbiome and mercury bioaccessibility. She is now working in the Viral Discovery and Ecology Lab, headed by Prof. Alex Culley, where she is interested in the diversity of environmental viruses in the Arctic. Her work focuses on the North at the intersection of environmental studies and human health. She is engaged in science communication, outreach as well as issues of diversity representation in STEM. She is the co-founder of Women in Science working group at the University of Montreal, and she won the second-place prize at national-wide competition “My thesis in 180 seconds” in 2017.

===Isabelle Laforest-Lapointe===

Dr. Laforest-Lapointe est une chercheure postdoctorale spécialisée en écologie microbienne, en écologie des communautés, en bioinformatique et en biostatistiques.  Elle s’est vu attribuer la bourse pour stage postdoctorale de l’Hôpital et Institut de Recherche pour enfant de l’Alberta (ACHRI) ainsi que la bourse pour stage postdoctorale de l’école de médecine Cumming en 2017 et 2018.  Elle a obtenu son doctorat de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), avec une mention d’excellence ainsi que le prix pour la meilleure recherche étudiante en 2016.  Elle a aussi été nommé dans le top 10 des plus grandes découvertes scientifiques de Québec Science en 2017 pour sa recherche sur les interactions plantes-microbes, dont une partie fut publiée dans la prestigieuse revue Nature.  Elle possède aussi une maîtrise en écologie et gestion de la biodiversité de l’Université Autonome de Barcelone (2010-11) et a aussi complété tous les cours de la maîtrise en statistique de la polytechnique de la Catalogne.  Elle s’intéresse autant à l’étude des interactions hôte-microbes au travers de divers modèles et sous l’angle de l’écologie fonctionnelle et de l’écologie des communautés.  Elle est aussi instructrice en programmation et en analyse de données depuis 2014.

Dr. Laforest-Lapointe is a postdoctoral fellow specialized in microbial ecology, community ecology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. She was awarded the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Excellence Award as well as the Cumming School of Medicine Postdoctoral Scholarship in 2017 and in 2018. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology (2012-2017) from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) for which she obtained a mention of excellence as well as the award for best student research in 2016 at UQAM. She was selected to be part of the Top Ten Best Scientific Discoveries by Quebec Science in 2017 for her research on plant-microbe interactions, which was published in the prestigious journal Nature. She also holds a Master in Ecology and Diversity Management (2010-2011) from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and completed all the class training of a Master in Statistics from the Polytecnica de Catalunya (2011-2012). Her interests range from host-microbe interactions to statistics, from a functional ecology and a community dynamics perspective. She is also a Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructor since 2014.

===Josh Neufeld===

Le professeur Josh D. Neufeld a reçu son baccalauréat au Campus Macdonald de l’Université McGill en 1998, suivi d’une maîtrise avec Fred Archibald (Pulp and Paper Research Institute – PAPRICAN, et Université McGill) en 2000, où il a étudié le cyclage de l’azote au sein du système de traitement des eaux de l’industrie de pâtes et papiers. Il a par la suite joint le groupe de Bill Mohn à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, où il a étudié l’écologie microbienne du sol et a obtenu son doctorat en 2005. Le Professeur Neufeld a ensuite quitté le Canada pour un stage postdoctoral à l’Université de Warwick au Royaume-Uni, où il a étudié les méthylotrophes à l’aide de la technique de « Stable Isotope Probing » avec le Professeur Colin Murell. Il a par la suite joint les rangs de l’Université de Waterloo en 2007 au sein du département de Biologie et a récemment été promu professeur titulaire. Ses recherches traitent de la diversité microbienne, des liens entre fonction et phylogénie parmi les cycles du carbone et de l’azote et du développement de méthodes liées à la bioinformatique et à la métagénomique. La recherche du labo Neufeld est très diversifiée, mais celle-ci a une thématique commune, couvrant les microbiomes terrestres, d’eau douce, d’eau usée et même du microbiome cutané des mammifères. Le Professeur Neufeld a gagné de nombreux prix pour la qualité de son enseignement ainsi que pour ses exploits en recherche.

Professor Josh D. Neufeld received his BSc from Macdonald Campus of McGill University in 1998, followed by a MSc with Fred Archibald (Pulp and Paper Research Institute – PAPRICAN, and McGill University) in 2000, where he studied nitrogen cycling within pulp and paper wastewater treatment systems. He then joined Bill Mohn’s group at the University of British Columbia where he studied soil microbial ecology and obtained his PhD in 2005. Professor Neufeld left Canada for a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, where he studied methylotrophs using stable isotope probing with Professor Colin Murell. He joined the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo in 2007 and was recently promoted to Full Professor. His research focuses on microbial diversity, the links between function and phylogeny within the carbon and nitrogen cycles, and method development related to both bioinformatics and metagenomics. Research in the Neufeld lab is diverse yet thematically linked, spanning terrestrial, freshwaters, wastewater, and even the mammalian skin microbiome. Professor Neufeld has also won several awards for teaching excellence as well as for his microbiology research achievements

===Alejandro Reyes===

Alejandro Reyes a obtenu son doctorat en biologie des systèmes et en bio-informatique dans le laboratoire du professeur John L. Gordon à l’école de médecine de l’Université de Washington à St-Louis, où il a publié des travaux fondamentaux sur les bactériophages du microbiote intestinal humain, dont son article dans Nature intitulé « Metagenomic analysis of viruses in the fecal microbiota of monozygotic twins and their mothers ». Il est actuellement professeur associé à la Universidad de los Andes en Colombie, professeur adjoint  à l’Université de Washington à St-Louis et directeur de recherche du groupe tandem Max Planck en bioinformatique à la Universidad de los Andes. Ses recherches se concentrent sur l’usage de bioinformatique afin de développer des outils omiques (e.g. génomique, transcriptomique, métabolomique) permettant de caractériser les communautés microbiennes ainsi que leurs interactions avec l’environnement.

Alejandro Reyes got his PhD in Computational and Systems Biology from the Gordon Lab at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he published foundational research on bacteriophages in the human gut microbiota, such as his Nature paper “Metagenomic analysis of viruses in the fecal microbiota of monozygotic twins and their mothers”. He is currently an Associate professor at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia, adjunct Assistant professor at Washington University in Saint Louis and the Max Planck tandem group leader in Computational Biology, at Universidad de los Andes. His research focus on using computational biology to develop -omics tools (genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, etc.) for the characterization of microbial communities and their interactions with the environment.

===Stefan Bertilsson===

Le Dr Stefan Bertilsson est chercheur en biogéochimie et en écologie microbienne. Il a obtenu son doctorat au département d’Études Environnementales et Aquatiques de l’Université de Linköping en Suède suite à ses travaux sur l’impact des altérations photochimiques de la matière organique dissoute sur les bactéries hétérotrophes et le cycle du carbone lacustres. Le Dr Bertilsson a ensuite quitté la Suède pour poursuivre un stage postdoctoral en Environnement et Développement durable au MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) en tant que récipiendaire de la bourse de la fondation Knut & Alice Wallenberg. Pendant ce stage, il a développé et appliqué des outils moléculaires afin d’étudier le fonctionnement de communautés microbiennes complexes. Il est actuellement professeur en biologie au département d’Écologie et de Génétique à l’Université d’Uppsala en Suède. Il agit aussi à titre de directeur du centre SciLifeLab Microbial Single Cell Genomics et travail à temps partiel comme directeur pour le SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science). Ses recherches ciblent la manière dont les microorganismes influencent le cycle biogéochimique du carbone et d’autres éléments associés, ainsi que la manière dont la composition et la fonction des communautés microbiennes sont affectées par divers facteurs environnementaux.

Dr. Stefan Bertilsson engages in biogeochemical and microbial ecology research. He obtained his PhD from the Dept of Water and Environmental Studies at Linköping University in Sweden, studying the impact of photochemical alterations of dissolved organic matter on heterotrophic bacteria and carbon cycling in lakes. Dr. Bertilsson left Sweden to pursue his postdoctoral studies in Environment and Sustainability at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a K&A Wallenberg Fellow. During this time he developed and applied molecular tools to study the functioning of complex microbial communities. He is currently a Professor of Biology at the Department of Ecology and Genetics at Uppsala University. He is also the Director for the SciLifeLab Microbial Single Cell Genomics Facility and works halftime as Director for the Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science (SITES). His research focuses on how microorganisms influence the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and associated elements and how the composition and function of microbial communities are controlled by environmental factors.

===Laura Hug===

La Dre. Laura Hug, chaire de recherche du Canada en microbiologie environnementale, est professeure adjointe à l'Université de Waterloo. Elle est titulaire d'un doctorat en biologie cellulaire et systémique de l'Université de Toronto (2012). Ses recherches portent sur la diversité microbienne et les fonctions sur les sites contaminés, avec un accent particulier sur les décharges municipales. Dre. Hug et son équipe de recherche utilisent des méta-omiques et la culture d'enrichissement pour explorer la manière dont les microbes interagissent les uns avec les autres et dont ils modifient le milieu. L'identification et la caractérisation de nouvelles lignées de bactéries et d'archées élargissent notre compréhension de «l'arbre de vie». Dre. Hug est une critique pour Nature, Cell, The ISME Journal et de nombreuses autres revues scientifiques respectées. Elle est actuellement la directrice associée du centre des recherches microbiennes de Waterloo.

Dr. Laura Hug, a Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology, is an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo. She holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Systems Biology from the University of Toronto (2012). Her research examines microbial diversity and functions at contaminated sites, with a specific focus on municipal landfills. The Hug Research Group uses meta-omics and enrichment culturing to explore how microbes interact with each other and how they shape their environments. Identification and characterization of novel lineages of bacterial and archaea expand our understanding of the “tree of life”. Dr. Hug is a reviewer for Nature, Cell, The ISME Journal and many other respected scientific journals. She currently is an Associate Director of the Waterloo Centre for Microbial Research.
