- | Dr. Kari Dunfield is a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph, specialized in soil microbial communities ecology. After a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, she did an M.Sc. in Crop Science at University of Saskatchewan, followed by a Ph.D. at the same University in Soil Science, finished in 2002. She now holds Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology of Agro-ecosystems at the University of Guelph and is also an editor for the Canadian Journal of Microbiology. Her main research areas encompass different aspects of soil microbial communities ecology, with a special focus on linking molecular profiles to communities functions involved in soil biogeochemical processes. To overcome this challenge, Prof. Kari Dunfield relies on developing interdisciplinary research, based on collaboration amongst different laboratories. The ultimate goal of her research is to develop agronomic practices more respectful of the environment and efficient tools for soil bioremediation. | + | Dr. Kari Dunfield is a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph, specialized in soil microbial communities ecology.

+ | Dr. Jérôme Comte is an assistant professor at the Centre Eau Terre Environnement of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Quebec City, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology (Université du Québec à Montréal, 2010) and conducted post-doctoral studies at Uppsala University (Sweden) and Université Laval (Canada). Before joining INRS, Dr. Comte worked as a researcher at the Canada Center for Inland Waters (Environment and Climate Change Canada) in Burlington, Ontario until 2018. His research focuses on the diversity and function of microbial communities within aquatic ecosystems, with a particular focus on northern environments. The main objective of Dr. Comte's research program is to identify the response mechanisms of microbial communities to environmental changes and to assess their implications for the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

+ | ===Marie-Claire Arrieta===

+ | Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta is an Assistant Professor in the departments of Physiology, Pharmacology and Pediatrics of the University of Calgary. Her research examines the interactions between the early-life gut microbiome and the infant’s immune system. Her research program is framed around a translational approach, in which samples collected from children undergoing clinical care or enrolled in a birth cohort studies are used to characterize the microbial alterations (dysbiosis) associated with asthma and asthma risk. Her research group also examines the causality and mechanistic underpinnings of these associations in well-established mouse models of allergic airway inflammation, placing her work at a critical interface between clinical studies and experimental animal work. As an advocate of science communication to the public, Dr. Arrieta has written a best-selling public book, Let Them Eat Dirt, and is involved in several science communication initiatives within Canada and abroad, including public talks, a second book and a documentary film project.
